چکیده

In this paper we study equilibriumand experimental bidding behaviour in first-price and second price auctions with outside options. We find that bidders do respond to outside options and to variations of common knowledge about competitors’ outside options. However, overbidding in first-price auctions is significantly higher with outside options than without. First-price auctions yield more revenue than second-price auctions. This revenue-premium is significantly higher with outside options. In second-price auctions the introduction of outside options has only a small effect.

Optimal Auctions with Outside Competition

This paper studies how a revenue-maximizing auction seller responds to competition outside the auction. Outside competition is modeled by buyer-sided outside options. Since outside options for buyers increase the degree of competition from the seller’s point of view, intuition suggests that a revenue-maximizing seller might seek to enhance the competitiveness of her auction offer. In contrast, ...

Optimal auctions with endogenous budgets

We study the benchmark independent private value auction setting when bidders have endogenously determined budgets. Before bidding, a bidder decides how much money she will borrow. Bidders incur a cost to borrowing. We show that bidders are indifferent between participating in a first-price, second-price and all-pay auction. The all-pay auction gives higher revenue than the first-price auction,...

One Auction or Two: Simultaneous vs. Sequential Sales in Multi-unit Auctions

This paper explores whether an auctioneer can benefit by dividing his stock of items into identical lots and auctioning off the lots sequentially, rather than selling them all in one auction. As for most auction houses, the auctioneer is not a monopolistic seller who can choose how much to produce—he or she has a consignment from a seller, which he or she has to sell so as to maximize the expec...

Collusion in Unrepeated, First-Price Auctions with an Uncertain Number of Participants

We introduce a class of mechanisms, called bidding clubs, that allow agents to coordinate their bidding in auctions. Bidding clubs invite a set of agents to join, and each invited agent freely chooses whether to accept the invitation or whether to participate independently in the auction. Agents who join a bidding club first conduct a “pre-auction” within the club; depending on the outcome of t...

Revenue equivalence revisited

The conventional wisdom in the auction design literature is that first price sealed bid auctions tend to make more money while ascending auctions tend to be more efficient. We re-examine these issues in an environment in which bidders are allowed to endogenously choose in which auction format to participate. Our findings are that more bidders choose to enter the ascending auction than the first...
